Description
Here is a vintage set of Shrifal and Indoni hand beaded coconut and ring base. The coconut is very important in Hindu tradition and is incorporated in many rituals and ceremonies, This version, the hand beaded coconut with 2 whirling logs, 2 trees of life, a peacock, a cow, flowers and a duck, are used at weddings to help ensure fertility. May have been made as part of the wedding dowry. It would be carried at other auspicious occasions by women of the family.Probably made mid twentieth century.
Gujarat is the centre for Bead Craft, also known as Moti Bharat, across India.
The shrifal is done in 6 colors of glass beads on a net. There are three areas of bead loss ( .5” x .5”) where the net shows through, please see the photos. However, the beading is so busy the bead loss is not very obvious. You can hear the coconut seed when shaking the shrifal. 6.5” high x 3.5” diameter.
The Indhoni or ring is also hand beaded with green and red cotton on the inside of the ring. No damage. The beads are larger than those on the shrifal, so they were not made together. I have also read these rings were used on top of the head to carry water vessels. Outer diameter 3 7/8”, inner diameter: 2 1/8” diameter.
