Printed in Great Britain by
The Dunedin Press, Limited Edinburgh.
No copyright date is noted, but this translation by Ms. Bell, is generally felt to have been published in the early 1930s.
Hardbound in very good condition, 217 pages includes a FRONTISPIECE (
The Reef
) by Norman H. Hardy plus 5 pages that summarize Pierre Loti's other literary accomplishments. Measures approximately 6" x 9".
The jacket is, heavy, textured beige stock with red titles and trim. It is age toned and the spine is faded but there is no particular edge wear noted. It has been placed in an Archival Quality clear Mylar jacket cover to preserve it in the future.
The boards are covered in burgundy cloth a label pasted on the spine. They are sparkling clean and straight, free of wear or fading.
The interior reveals contents that are tight with and uncut vertical edge, many pages yet unopened. The book although likely unread was apparently stored in a fairly moist environment as there is foxing to the page edges, but only occasionally into the actual margins.A few pages were opened without the desired care and have been repaired with acid-free document tape. There are no previous owner names, notations, marks or creases.
THE MARRIAGE OF LOTI is the story of young French naval officer, Pierre Loti's romance with a Tahitian girl. While sailing through the South Seas, twice Loti visited Tahiti where he met and wed Rarahu. Inspired by the beauty of the islands, Loti recorded his impressions in his native tongue, French, whereby countless generations, including Paul Guaguin, have shared his passions.
First published in 1880, this story has been translated several times into English not to mention many other languages.
This English copy of THE MARRIAGE OF LOTI is one of the early translations by Clara Bell, rarely available today although it has been reissued in recent years in a modern soft binding.
